A LITTLE GREEK, EVERY DAY
Sources & little details.
The word garden
Lexi contains 1,000 unique, child-friendly Modern Greek vocabulary entries with English meanings, approximate pronunciation help and short original examples. It is a curated learning set informed by frequency data, rather than the strict top 1,000 ranked tokens. Base forms, useful child vocabulary and everyday themes take priority over subtitle names, adult language and repeated inflections.
Exact-form frequency ranks, where available, come from the Greek 2018 FrequencyWords list by Hermit Dave, derived from OpenSubtitles data. A rank refers to that exact written form in that corpus; it does not establish a universal frequency rank for a lemma or its meanings. Abstract grammar words are included, but words without clear literal photos use picture clues or Greek text.

Lexi vocabulary data, including translations and example additions, is made available under Creative Commons Attribution–ShareAlike 4.0. Download vocabulary.json or read the full data attribution. Changes include selection, base-form curation, English definitions, phonetic hints, categories, and original examples. Pronunciation hints are approximate and should be used alongside spoken Greek.
Safari & speech
Word playback uses the bundled Greek recordings, including slow playback. Example sentences and letter names use an available Greek device voice. Speaking practice asks Safari for Greek recognition (el-GR) and compares recognized words, ignoring capitalization, accents and an optional noun article. It is not a phonetic or pronunciation assessment.
Safari speech recognition was introduced with Safari 14.1 / iOS 14.5. The original iPad Air remains on iOS 12 and cannot use this browser API. Siri may need to be enabled. Home Screen support and Greek language availability must be checked on the actual device; browser detection alone cannot guarantee recognition. Parent-checked practice remains available.

Lexi does not record or store audio or transcripts. Enabling speech recognition permits your browser’s speech service to process voice input, which may happen on its provider’s servers. Practice counts, word progress, favourites, lesson checkpoints, letters, game history, rewards and settings are saved locally in this browser. No automatic cross-device sync is performed. Clearing Safari website data removes them.
Greek word audio
No generated Greek audio pack is included in this version. Browser speech uses the Greek voices exposed by the device.
ElevenLabs-generated word clips, when included, are labelled AI-generated audio. They are bundled locally for playback and offline use; this app contains no ElevenLabs API key and makes no ElevenLabs generation requests while a child practises. Example sentences and letter names continue to use the browser voice when no matching clip is included.
Photos & pictures
Photos are bundled locally so they can work offline. Image files are resized and compressed, and cards may crop their display. Each photo retains its listed licence; Creative Commons photos include author and source attribution. Photo licences and credits are listed per image below, with photos from Unsplash and Wikimedia Commons. Images use the licence shown in their individual credit. Source links for every bundled image are below. Unicode emoji are rendered by the device. The Lexi Greek-alpha icon was created for this app.
